Leslie Brothers Lumber Co. Was founded in Cowen West Virginia in the
year 1952 , with a small handset sawmill. Cutting mostly mining materials. The
two brothers who started the business were Clyde C. Leslie and William (Bill )
Leslie. Bill handled the woods and Clyde ran the sawmill and sales. Both had
families. Clyde married Mary Margaret Young of Charleston, West Virginia. Bill
married Opal Gertrude Miller of Webster Springs, West Virginia. Clyde’s children
consisted of Pat York (his step daughter)Clyde C. Leslie Jr., John David Leslie,
Larry Solomon Leslie. Bill’s children were Terry Allan Leslie, Thomas Wade
Leslie, Tim William Leslie, Teddy Paul Leslie.
Most all children worked with their dads in the business learning the skill
needed to run a lumber company. Because of their knowledge and need of logging
equipment Clyde and Bill also started an equipment business, Leslie Brothers
Equipment Company. Which now is Leslie Equipment Company owned by John Leslie, (LEC).
The business mostly sells John Deere Equipment.
Bill died suddenly in 1975 and because of a buy/sell agreement Bills family
received the insurance settlement. And Clyde received sole ownership of the
Lumber Company. As Bills children grew up they moved on to other occupations. In
1980 Leslie Brothers Lumber Co. started dry kiln lumber with 120 MBF capacity.
In 1985 Leslie Brothers Lumber Company started making hardwood flooring.
Clyde passed away in 1989. This passed ownership to Larry and Cliff. Larry
bought Cliff out in 1990.
Through the years LBLC added a Line Bar Re-saw and a new green chain to the
sawmill. All so added was a bag house for the flooring mill, and automated the
Boiler and put in two 85,000 BF kilns, two dry sheds, a lumber stacker and a
1,000,000.Ft. Cross Draft Pre-dryer.
Our capacity to dry 4/4 oak is 10MMBF a year. All run through our pre-dryer
eliminating checks, sap stain, bow, crook, twist, cup, warp, water stains,
discoloration (by the sun when air drying). All of our lumber is re-graded after
kiln drying to ensure customer satisfaction. Lumber is voice tallied and
downloaded in to our custom made program, our tallies show thickness, grade
Number of piece, length, width, number of layers, Finish.
Our location in the Northern West Virginia Highlands give us the opportunity to
sell you lumber with consistent color, with little to no mineral. We produce
good length and width our re-saw produce better widths because we do not square
down to 6" like many in the industry using gang saws. We cut 3/4 to 8/4 but
stock mainly 4/4. We usually separate FAS 1F, Select, 1 com, 2 com. But can
grade according to your needs.
All lumber is double end trimmed and end coated with a tally for each bundle. It
shows thickness, grade and piece count, width, length and Board feet. Our heated
dry shed insures that the lumber you buy is between 6% and 8%.
In the drying process we use 8 samples and 6 probes (Nardi Kilns) per kiln. When
the first sample dries to 6% the equalization process starts and continues till
all the lumber is between 6 % and 7% then the conditioning to relieve stress
starts and continues till all the samples show no stress.
